Situated on Brooklyn’s Western edge alongside the Bay Ridge Channel  and informally spanning 36th to 65th streets, Sunset Park hosts one of the most ethnically heterogenous populations of the borough. The neighborhood’s eponymous park is situated on a hill that boasts sprawling views of the Manhattan skyline. As the sun descends over the horizon at dusk, sounds of Spanish, Mandarin, and English conversations mingle in the air with rumbles of taco truck generators and chimes of ice cream cart bells. Recent census data states that 50% of the neighborhood is Latino and 40% is Asian. This photo essay, produced as a final project for the graduate course Reading Contemporary Photography of the Developing World, explores Mexican community life in the area.
